Myanmar Military Bombs Kyauktaw's India Market — 33 Civilians Killed

There is terrible news today. On September 28, 2026, just after 12 noon, junta jet fighters bombed Kyauktaw town in Rakhine State. The targets were the area near the Kissapanadi Bridge and the crowded India Market.

According to local residents, the first jet struck at 12:10 PM and a second jet struck again at 12:14 PM. It was market time, when the market was packed with vendors and shoppers — residents say the bombing was deliberate.

According to the Arakan Army (AA), around 33 civilians have been killed so far and 36 injured. With many suffering severe injuries, the death toll may rise further. Evening reports say rescue workers have recovered up to 46 bodies.

Local aid worker Wai Hun Aung confirmed the toll, saying: "This location is quite far from the fighting and has nothing to do with the conflict." Kyauktaw hospital has not been able to confirm an exact toll, as the dead and injured were taken to different hospitals.

The bombing set fire to cars, three-wheelers, motorbikes and farm trucks parked in the market, destroying them. The Kissapanadi Bridge was also damaged, and passersby on the bridge were killed and injured.

This is the deadliest mass killing of civilians in Rakhine since the bombing of Mrauk-U People's Hospital last December. Also today, at 12:35 PM, two more bombs were dropped near Ngapali beach in Thandwe township.

On September 24, a Y-12 aircraft dropped around 30 bombs near Kyauktaw, injuring 7 civilians, including 2 children under the age of 10. According to the AA's September 27 statement, regime air and artillery attacks between September 17 and 27 killed 6 civilians and injured 16.

Why target civilians? The junta, losing ground on the Sittwe and Kyaukphyu fronts, is brutally attacking civilian towns and villages from the air. The junta has made no comment on this bombing. Reuters says it could not independently verify the details of the incident.

Honey's take is simple — bombing a crowded market at market time is the deliberate killing of civilians. For these mass killings, Min Aung Hlaing will one day face justice. Let us pray together with Honey for the fallen people.
